Aqua
at Allison Island, Florida
Aqua on Allison Island is an exclusive 8.5-acre
private island in Miami Beach. The urban waterfront development
consists of 3 midrise waterfront condominiums and 46 island
homes, and it is a new concept in tropical urbanism. Coastal
Systems International, Inc. worked with the project team
to provide waterfront engineering services for the existing
bulkheads as well as the design and permitting of the
new docks.
Coastal Systems' engineer-divers assessed the existing
bulkheads at the site prior to construction. The structural
evaluation determined that the bulkheads were in satisfactory
condition and could remain in service for the redevelopment.
Obtaining new boat slips in Miami-Dade County Florida
is extremely difficult given the stringent environmental
regulations in the Biscayne Bay Aquatic Preserve. Coastal
Systems worked closely with the project team to design
and permit 12 docks to accommodate 21 boats slips for
vessels up to 50 feet. Coastal Systems conducted hydrographic
and marine resource surveys to plan the new docks to
avoid seagrass impacts. Docks were permitted for selected
island homes, and permits were secured from the U.S.
Army Corps of Engineers, Florida Department of Environmental
Protection and Miami-Dade County DERM.
Construction plans were prepared for the concrete pile-supported
timber docks. The docks were constructed with IPE timber
grating to minimize shading of seagrass under the docks.
Dock utilities were designed to supply shore power and
water for the boat slips. Construction administration
services were also provided.
